Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello has directed residents of over 25 communities sacked by flood along the plains of River Niger and its tributaries be evacuated and resettled to upland as a temporary measure. The affected communities currently submerged by flood are in four wards of Edati and Mokwa Local Government areas of the state.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decried the reduction of the Federal Government’s allocation to the education sector from 11 per cent in 2015 to 8 per cent in 2016. The ASUU Sokoto Zonal Coordinator, Dr Lawal Argungu, made this known at a Press Conference in Sokoto  on Saturday . “The way FGN treats the funding of education in this country makes it difficult for ASUU to believe the sincerity of the government in reforming the education sector in Nigeria. ”It is certainly quite possible for us to reposition our educational sector appropriately if we put our priorities right in this country in spite of the apparent economic hardship. ”The union is willing to use every legitimate instrument at its disposal to ensure government fund universities as contained in the valid agreements, Argungu said. Sokoto state government has given approval for the transfer, back home, of 39 of its citizens currently in various schools in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. In today’s exchange rate, the move will enable the government save over N500m from the policy. The government said this signals change of priorities in the payment of scholarship to study abroad. “The transfer/relocation of the students was necessitated by the need to conserve funds and apply same to more critical areas in the education sector,” the state Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said this Friday in Sokoto when he received the report of the committee instituted to advise government on the issue. BATON ROUGE- The woman who bonded out a mother who was arrested for disciplining her children said she felt compelled to help the single mom of six. 30-year-old Schaquana Spears was charged with child cruelty, when East Baton Rouge sheriff’s detectives discovered bruises and cuts on her three boys, all between the ages of 10 and 13.
