The Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), a Lagos-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), has said that it assisted over 100 inmates to regain their freedom.
The PRAWA Executive Director, Mrs Uju Agomoh, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday
Agomoh said that the inmates were awaiting trials at the Enugu Prisons.
She said that of the 100 inmates, 67 with mental illness were transferred to PRAWA by the Chief Judge of Enugu for treatment and rehabilitation in psychiatric hospitals.
According to her, close to 90 per cent of them have been reintegrated back into their families.
Agomoh said that in March, PRAWA initiated what it called Civil Society Practitioners Platform to share experiences and partner with other NGOs.
“We also intensify our programmes through human rights training for the police. We’ve printed 6,000 copies of the human rights training manuals.
“We have 4,000 copies of human rights training guide and 16,000 copies of the Nigeria Police human rights training pocket handbook,” she said.
The series of training, she said, were held at the Police College, Ikeja, and the Police Training School, Ikeja, Lagos.
“We have a joint training for them and over 97 instructors were trained on human rights and on how to incorporate these modules into their respective teachings.
“We held this same training at the Police College, Kaduna, in April; we also had a training completing the regional base training for trainers for all the Police Training Schools in the country,” she said.
She commended the Netherlands Embassy, German Incorporation Supporters and the Swiss Embassy for supporting PRAWA.
Agomoh, particularly appreciated their support in the areas of social development and rehabilitation programmes on anti-human trafficking initiative in Edo, Ogun, Kano, Kaduna and Anambra.
