Nasarawa Assembly Committed to Speedy Passage of NAGIS Bill

The Nasarawa state House of Assembly, committee chairman on Lands and town planning, Hon. Hashimu Jibrin Gurku, has assured that priority would be given to the bill seeking to give legal backing for the establishment of the Nasarawa Geographic Information Service (NAGIS) to ensure its speedy passage.

Gurku who spoke on Thursday in Lafia during a one day public hearing on the bill commended Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for establishing NAGIS aimed at addressing the challenges of land registration and administration in the state, adding that the idea was in the right direction.
Gurku explained that when the bill is passed into law, it would reduce the frequency of litigation on properties,  increase revenue accrual to the state and add value to property as a result of proper documentation.
He said: “It is equally important to stress that this noble gesture is what obtains in modern policy drive where  detailed land use platform is harnessed to drive social change and economic prosperity.”
In his submission, the commissioner of Lands and Town Planning, Mr. Sonny Agassi, said after four years in existence,  it was worrisome that NAGIS was yet to have the backing of a law establishing it.
Agassi stressed that when the bill seeking to establish NAGIS is passed into law, it would give it a platform to compete globally and open a new vista for land administration and revenue generation.
He said: “NAGIS is a success story needing legal support to be able to discharge its duties under the law”.
Speaking on the alleged incursion into lands belonging to Nasarawa state by the Etsu Karu, HRH Luka Baba Panya, the Lands commissioner assured that the state government will not relent in ensuring that all the lands encroached upon by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) are reclaimed.
“We will not allow Abuja encroach on our land, we are well aware of our boundaries and I want to assure that we will confront the FCT and reclaim every inch of our land” he maintained.
Agassi, who rolled out the unparalleled revenue generation efforts of NAGIS said the agency has revolutionized the Internally Generated Revenue base of the state through land administration.
He pointed out that from little over N30 million generated on land administration in the state in 2011, NAGIS, the brainchild of Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura, generated over N1.5 billion in 2015.
While speaking the Etsu Karu, Baba Panya, solicited for a clause to provide for the setting aside of a percentage of what accrues from acquisition of land titles for the development of the areas from where such revenues are generated.

Two weeks after the formal introduction of the Treasury Single Accounting (TSA) system in Sokoto, the state government said it has uncovered N1.5 billion lying idle in 100 redundant accounts belonging to it in various commercial banks in the country. The state commissioner of finance, Alhaji Umar Saidu, who stated this in Sokoto on Sunday while giving an update on the system’s implementation, said government is determined to trace and close down all dormant and  inactive accounts operated by it. He said since the introduction of the TSA, there has been a massive improvement in the reconciliation of public finance figures between the government and commercial banks. This, according to him, has reduced risk of errors in reconciliation processes and has enhanced timeliness and quality of the fiscal figures from such accounts. The commissioner said the introduction of the TSA has now enabled government to regularly monitor public cash balances while at the same time ensu...

Recession: Sokoto Cancels Scholarships, Withdraws its Students from Foreign Universities

Sokoto state government has given approval for the transfer, back home, of 39 of its citizens currently in various schools in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. In today’s exchange rate, the move will enable the government save over N500m from the policy. The government said this signals change of priorities in the payment of scholarship to study abroad. “The transfer/relocation of the students was necessitated by the need to conserve funds and apply same to more critical areas in the education sector,” the state Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said this Friday in Sokoto when he received the report of the committee instituted to advise government on the issue. He added that admissions have been secured for all the students in Nigerian schools, while arrangements have been made to ensure that none of them misses a grade level upon their return home. “As at the time we sent the children to Dubai to study last year, the state government was spending over 400 million naira per ...
